While a few Persian recipes ended up in her first cookbook, it wasn't until she really started researching and experimenting with recipes for her second cookbook titled The New Persian Kitchen, that author and chef Louisa Shafia really discovered her Iranian culture.  Her father, an Iranian immigrant, didn't speak much about his past, and Shafia had grown up in America, not knowing or hearing much about her Persian heritage or knowing her extended Iranian family members.  The New Persian Kitchen changed all of that, and now she specializes in the food of Iran - particularly healthy, vegetable centric food.
