Lynchings on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore: Somerset County

Summary

Somerset County was another membership stronghold for the Ku Klux Klan in the State of Maryland. Between 600-700 Klansmen were estimated to reside in the county. Klan chapters were reportedly organized in the towns of Princess Anne, Crisfield, Deal Island, Ewell, and Marion Station, with activity taking place throughout the county. Somerset County is also notable for having one of its newspapers, the Marylander and Herald, routinely publish Klan propaganda, advertisements, and news stories about the organization's national activity on its second page.
