Lynchings on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore: Wicomico County

Summary

While not as strong as its presence in Dorchester and Somerset counties, the Ku Klux Klan was notably active in Wicomico County. Around 250 Klansmen were estimated to reside in the county. Klan chapters were organized in the towns of Salisbury, Delmar, Mardela Springs, and Sharptown, with activity taking place throughout the county. Wicomico County is most notable for being the site of a shore-wide Klan rally in Sharptown in 1923.
