Activities for Kids during School Closings: Reading

Here are some possible activities to do with your kids at home while schools are cancelled.

Reading Activities

  • Storyline Online: Watch famous actors and actresses read picture books aloud. Each video includes an activity guide with lessons for students in grades K-5.

  • International Children's Digital Library: This site from the University of Maryland offers more than 4,000 children's books online. The site is fairly basic, with not a lot of bells and whistles, but it has an amazing collection, including books in many foreign languages.

  • Let's Keep Reading LivBits: List of author read-alouds and also includes art-related activities

  • Kate Messner: Author Kate Messner shares videos from authors and illustrators, reading aloud and talking about their work

  • Emily Arrow: Librarian Emily Arrow shares singalongs with music and stories on her YouTube channel

  • Story Time From Space: Astronauts read stories from space

  • Oxford Owl for Home: site from Oxford University Press that focuses primarily on helping parents help children learn to read
