PHIL 209: Philosophy & Culture: Background

This is a libguide created for Dr. Song's Philosophy & Culture class.

What do you know / What don't you know?

As you embark on gathering sources about your Culture Group, a good way to start is to make two lists: what do you already know about your culture group, and what you still need to find out. These prompts will help you look for background information about your group. Typically, background information is found in Books. Use the search box below to search the SU Library Catalog for books about your group.

Found it in the catalog? Use the call number locator to find it in the building

Call Number Locator: The call number of a library item is like a home address. Copy and paste any call number you find in the library catalog to see where it lives in the library.

PRO TIP: How to use books for your research.

You probably don't have to read an entire book to get what you need in order to discuss your culture group. Follow this advice on how to use a book for your research:

  • Read the introduction first: Most academic books will have an introduction that provides background about the topic. There may also be a breakdown of what each chapter is about.
  • Read the table of contents: This will help you determine which chapter(s) will be the most useful.
  • Look for your keywords in the index: This will pinpoint exactly which passages on which you will want to focus
