Assignment Overview:

This assignment assesses students’ ability to critically think and evaluate empirical research pertinent to the discipline of health. Critical thinking is an ideal way of thinking using intellectual thinking to conceptualize and synthesize information. 

Students will research and select THREE articles that use one of the theories/models we have covered in class. Students must use a reputable journal for a peer reviewed. Some examples may be: Journal of School Health, Journal of American College Health, Health Education and Behavior, Health Promotion Practice, American Journal of Health Education, American Journal of Public Health, and Eta Sigma Gamma’s Health Educator and Monograph Series. For each article, students will turn in a copy of the article (5 pts) and a 1-2-page appraisal sheet (15 pts) of how that article used the respective theory/model. Students will complete this in class. APA format required!

Assignment Overview:     

You work at a non-profit organization and your supervisor recently discovered that you have experience writing grants. This is exciting news because the budget has been cut in other areas of your organization, and they are in need of unrestricted funds to address some of the health and environmental issues that influence your community. Your supervisor found a Request for Applications (RFA) through the S. A. Maykrantz Foundation.  The title of the proposal is Improving Health Through Innovative Social and Behavioral Interventions. You are given the Request for Applications (RFA) and agree to submit a strong grant proposal on behalf of your organization.

Narrative Instructions: Label each section in bold type.

  1. Title Page. Include a title page with the following information:
    1. Project name
    2. Organization
    3. Principal Investigator
    4. Funds requested
  2. Organization (one page words max.)
    1. Provide a brief overview of your organization and how the project aligns with your mission.
    2. Describe the qualifications of the principal investigator (PI) and why your organization is uniquely positioned to undertake this work.
    3. Describe the collaborative relationships needed for the project to be successful. Explain whether partnerships have already been established and what partners bring to the project. If collaborative relationships are not needed, explain why.
  3. Project Summary (one page max.)
    1. The Project Summary is meant to serve as a succinct and accurate description of the proposed work when separated from the application. Describe concisely the intervention design and methods for achieving the stated goals. This section should be informative to other persons working in the same or related fields.
  4. Background and Significance (two pages max)
    1. What is the public health problem?
    2. Provide a brief review of the research literature on your proposed topic.
    3. Explain the need for your project.
  5. Project Description and Approach (three pages max )
    1. Outline the project’s goals.
    2. Describe the target population to be served. 
    3. Present the theoretical framework supporting your project
    4. Describe the proposed project including the strategies and methodologies used to accomplish the specific aims of the project.
    5. Discuss potential problems and benchmarks for success anticipated to achieve the aims.
  6. Conclusion (one page max.)
    1. Summarize how this project will benefit your community and your target population.
    2. Remind the reader how it will help the public health problem.
  7. References –APA format

APPENDIX – (Optional) Include appendices if you want to show a sample survey form or a communications ad, or some other detail to your project
