ENVR 205: 'Proof of Concept' Research Beginnings

Library Instruction Goals

This guide should help you:

  • Form an approach to tackling your assignment.
  • Use keywords related to your concept art's topic to search.
  • Explore the library's information resources.
  • Distinguish between popular and peer-reviewed articles.
  • Evaluate the information you are finding on your topic.
  • Organize and manage the information you are finding & plan on using.
  • Create your 'proof of concept' based partially on the information you find.

Assignment and research approach

Sometimes, a structured approach to research can help to organize ideas and the way you think about information sources:

1. Explore the possibilities (casual web searching)
2. Get some background knowledge in your head (books)
3. Read up on current research ( journal articles)
4. Support your argument/debate (cite your sources)
5. Drafts & revisions (research librarians & learning commons)

In today's library session you will be learning about how to search
for #2 and #3 from up above,
and I will cover the basics of #4 as well.
