Usually taking a structured approach when researching can help you to organize your ideas and improve the way you think about using information sources:  

Step #1. Explore the basics about your research topic  (casual web searching)
Step #2. Learn specific background information about your research topic (library catalog: books)
Step #3. Read current / specific information about your research topic (library databases: scholarly communications via journal articles)
Step #4. Support your research hypothesis with backing information (source citation)
