This purpose of this guide is to help you research your Conflict Analysis Research Paper for CADR 200. Each tab provides resources for different aspects of your group project. The guide isn't a static document, and there may be updates throughout the semester.

Conflict Analysis Paper & Presentation

The main focus for your research in this class will be for your group research paper. Here are some reminders about the assignment, but be sure to check the assignment handout from your instructor for full details. You must choose a major conflict that is of interest to you and apply concepts to critically analyze the conflict.

  1. General Paper Requirements
    • At least 8 written pages (2,000 words)
    • At least 6 scholarly sources
      • At least 3 of which need to be peer-reviewed journal articles/research
    • Include a References Cited page (in addition to 8 written pages)
    • APA 7 formatting used correctly throughout
    • Use of proper grammar, spelling, & syntax in writing
  2. Areas of Analysis / Structure
    1. Introduction Paragraph
      • Overview of research + thesis statement
    2. Conflict Parties & Power Dynamics
      1. Who are the conflicting parties and how was their group identity established? Ask yourself objectively, what do the interests/positions/needs of each party seem to be? 
      2. What are the power dynamics between these parties? Refer to least 3 from the "sources of power" table.
    3. Conflict Theory Application
      1. Use a conflict model from class (Galtung, Burton, Coser, or Gurr) to contextualize your conflict in theory.
        1. What is the historical context of the conflict? How did the conflict emerge? (Refer to the conflict emergencies stages)
          1. What caused the conflict to move from latent to emergent? Include the forming of contentious goals.
          2. How has the conflict escalated and why?
        2. What is the current status of the conflict according to both Conflict Emergence Theory and Glasl's Stages of Escalation?
          1. What does each side think can be done about the issue to solve and/or de-escalate the conflict?
        3. How do the power dynamics contribute to this context and current stage of conflict?
    4. Conflict Resolution Recommendations
      1. Based on your analysis, identify the Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral dimensions of conflicts for these parties.
      2. Then, provide suggestions on resolution techniques that would help parties take steps towards a conflict resolution/problem-solving process to address these dimensions of conflict.
    5. Conclusion Paragraph
      • Summarize paper's findings, recommendations, and re-state thesis.
