LGBT History Month 2020: Home

October is LGBT History Month

LGBT History is American History  LGBT History Month was first observed in 1994 as a way of celebrating and teaching LGBT history.  The month of October was chosen because public schools are in session and other established traditions can be honored, such as National Coming Out Day and the anniversary of the first march on Washington by LGBT people.  During the early years, the celebration was largely marked by a call to action and commemoration. But since then, LGBT History Month has blossomed into a national coordinated effort to highlight exemplary role models from the LGBT community. Since 2006, this push has been led by the LGBT rights and education organization Equality Forum.
