The Spanish Influenza or the 1918 Influenza Pandemic was caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus and was unusually deadly. It began in February 1918 and spread through the world in four waves until April 1920. An estimated 500 million people were infected in these years with around 50 million deaths. This flu epidemic gained its name "Spanish Flu" due to Spain being the first country to report on how widespread the disease was.
