For students in Dr. Freeman's class.

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a citation management tool that can help you cite in thousands of styles, including the ones most commonly used at SU like APA, MLA, Chicago, and ACS. As an SU student, you automatically have access to RefWorks and can login with your GullNet credentials.RefWorks helps you gather, organize, read, annotate, share, and cite their sources. Plus, RefWorks creates an online collaboration space that enables groups to work together from any location.

Creating Folders

You will notice on the left side of the screen a list of options - including the 'My Folders' link.

Clicking on the 'My Folders' link shows you specific folder-focused options, including the option to Add a new one.

Clicking on that option brings up a basic box and asks you to name your new folder:

This is where you can pick whatever name makes the most sense to you.  Name the folder after your paper topic - or name the folder after your class - it's totally up to you.  RefWorks even gives you the option to Rename the folder later if you need to - or if you are getting super-granular you can even create Subfolders.

(Example:  create an BIOL folder and inside of there, have sub-folders titled BIOL 210 / BIOL 305 / BIOL 400 / etc. -or- create a folder called BIOL 326 and within there create sub-folders named Introduction / Materials and Methods / Discussion / Conclusion........)

Add PDFs to RefWorks

RefWorks lets you upload the full-text PDFs of the articles themselves, so you can keep all your citations and documents in one place.

Make sure that the PDF of the same article is downloaded somewhere on your computer - your desktop, your downloads folder - it doesn't matter where, you just need to be able to navigate to it!

Minimize the RefWorks screen a bit, so that you can simultaneously see the article information and your PDF at the same time.

Once that has been done, just drag the PDF of the article over top of the citation information on the right.

Once you have done this, the RefWorks system will spin and think a bit, and before you know it, the PDF of the article will have been uploaded to your account, and you can then read it whenever you want.
