What is a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon?

A Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon in progress.

According to Wikipedia itself, a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon is:

  1. a scheduled time where people edit Wikipedia together, whether offline, online, or a mix of both;
  2. typically focused on a specific topic, such as science or women's history;
  3. a way to recruit new Wikipedians and teach them how to contribute.

From the library's perspective, our Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon has several goals:

  1. To educate students about the library's resources and how to use them.
  2. To expose students to the positive and negative aspects of using resources like Wikipedia.
  3. To increase the quality of articles on Wikipedia.
  4. And to have fun!

Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon @ SU Libraries

This year will be the third that the SU Libraries hosts our annual Edit-a-Thon, and the first we'll hold in our brand new building, the Guerrieri Academic Commons.

During our event, participants will start by learning the basics of editing a Wikipedia article. Our Technology Librarian, Chris Woodall, will lead a series of short discussions at the top of every hour showing how to create an account, how to format and submit edits, and how to make sure you are following Wikipedia's editing guidelines.

After this part is over, participants are invited to explore Wikipedia to find articles of interest to them that, shall we say, "need some help." Once they find an article that needs improvement, they will use the library's resources to correct incorrect information, update the article with more up to date facts, or whatever the case may be. SU Librarians will be on hand to help them out if they get stuck or need help finding appropriate resources to check information in the articles.

And, most importantly, pizza and soda will be available to all participants!
