Library Instruction Goals

This guide can help you:

Form an approach to initiating the reserach assignment.

Start to gather information for an assignment.

+Assignment and research approach

Sometimes, a structured approach to research can help to organize ideas and the way you think about information sources:

1. Explore topic basics (casual web searching)
2. Background (library catalog: books)
3. Current research (library databases: journal articles)
4. Support your argument (source citation)
5. Drafts & revisions (research librarians & Writing Center)

Information Cycle - Literary Criticism

1. An original work is written and published for people to read.

Flannery O'Connor compiles several short stories within A Good Man is Hard to Find.

2. Researchers form opinions and ideas about the short story "Good Country People."

Researcher: "Hey, this story is about how even highly educated people can be ignorant, naive."

3. These critical essays are submitted to a journal. The journal publishes the essays as articles. The articles are read by other researchers who sometimes add ideas that the original articles did not consider.

All to increase knowledge and understanding of one text! Amazing!
