HIST 330 Walton

+Assignment and research approach

Taking a basic research approach early on may help you to start exploring facts, opinions/arguments/questions, and the relevancy and quality of the sources that you find.

1. Get the facts (tertiary sources: encyclopedias, almanacs, chronologies, etc)
2. Older, established info  (library catalog: books)
3. Specific scholarly "conversations" (library databases: journal articles)
4. Sources are evidence (source citation: Chicago-Turabian, RefWorks)
5. Drafts & revisions (research librarians & learning commons)

My example topic: Colonial America was a pretty boozy time. What role(s) did alcohol play in the lives of early colonists? What were some of the negative and positive ways that alcohol directly influenced our formative years?
